The Sacrament of Holy Orders

Picture
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is the continuation of Christ's priesthood, which He bestowed upon His Apostles; thus, the Catechism of the Catholic Church refers to the Sacrament of Holy Orders as "the sacrament of apostolic ministry."

The catechism tells us that the priesthood was established by God as “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”.  Through the ordained ministry, the presence of Christ as head of the church is made visible in the midst of the community of believers.  “Only Christ is the true priest, the others being only His ministers” CCC1545.

There is only one Sacrament of Holy Orders, but it is comprised of three levels:

1.  The Episcopate.  It was presented to the Apostles by Christ himself.  Bishops are conferred the grace to sanctify others as well as the authority to guide and teach the faithful.

2.  The Priesthood.  Priests promise obedience to their bishop and their successors at the time of their ordination and are united with the bishops to help minister to all of the faithful in his diocese.  They are assigned to a parish community and are responsible for preaching the Gospel and the celebration of the Eucharist.

3.  The diaconate.  Deacons are ministers ordained for tasks of service to the church and assist both bishops and priests.

El sacramento del Orden

Picture
